Themes: Love

Throughout the play the idea of love varies, depending on which character is talking about it.

The characters of Sheila and Gerald are engaged at the start of the play and do genuinely appear to be happy together and it brings them joy.  However, as the play develops the engagement is ended by Sheila who realises that she doesn't actually know Gerald as well as she thought, after the revelation of the affair.

TASK: Look at the way Gerald and Sheila talk at the start of the play, when they first become engaged and after hearing Gerald's story (below).  Think about whether this suggests their love way true or not.

Mr and Mrs B see love and marriage as a way to climb the social ladder.  Both are happy with the engagement between Gerald and Sheila as they see it as a way to improve their own lives.  They don't seem to care whether Gerald and Sheila are in love and Mrs B is very eager for Sheila to continue the engagement at the end of the play, regardless of Gerald's affair.
